Unsafe Behaviours Policy

1. Introduction

Unsafe behaviours are typically those characterized as dangerous and causing potential harm to self or others. Unsafe behaviours may include impulsive and chronic physical aggression toward others including threats of violence and possessing and utilizing weapons, cutting or other forms of self-mutilation, and destructive behaviours toward property.

2. Stopping Unsafe Behaviours

Staff will work with individuals to stop unsafe behaviours in an appropriate, respectful manner conducted with the utmost privacy whenever possible. Some steps may include, but are not limited to:

2. Stopping Unsafe Behaviours

Staff will work with individuals to stop unsafe behaviours in an appropriate, respectful manner conducted with the utmost privacy whenever possible. Some steps may include, but are not limited to:

  1. A request to stop the unsafe behaviour;
  2. Referral to counselling services; and
  3. Disciplinary action as required.

Since unsafe behaviours are typically those characterized as dangerous and causing potential harm to self or others, restraints may be used to stop the unsafe behaviour if there is a risk of harm and other attempts to stop the unsafe behaviour have failed to stop such behaviour. Threats of violence are also subject to the Division’s Threat of Violence procedure.

Seclusion is never to be used to stop unsafe behaviours.

3. Review

This policy will be reviewed at least annually and updated as needed.

Threats of violence are also subject to the Division’s Threat of Violence procedure.
